The flower farms in Naivasha are significant suppliers of the world's flowers market. This industry has boomed in the past decade making it one of the largest employers in the region. Workers migrate from across Kenya, often leaving family behind, to pursue steady employment.  Like many migrants, these women can be vulnerable to predatory hiring practices, unsafe conditions, low wages and unwanted sexual advances.

Some farms choose to hold themselves to a higher standard of conduct by becoming certified by Fairtrade Africa, an international organization dedicated to sustainable farming, fair labor practices and giving back to the local community.

Self-Help Groups

The owners of the Fairtrade flower farms in Naivasha take a portion of their profits to invest in community development projects. Workers gather into Self-Help Groups where they discuss and vote on how the community can best use the money. Thousands of these workers are women of childbearing age who have experienced the conditions of the previous maternity ward at the local hospital or otherwise struggled for access to healthcare. The owners and workers of 7 local farms overwhelming supported investing in the new Women's Center & Maternal Health Clinic.
